REMINDER: Green Building Forum to be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009 in the theater of the George Washington Masonic Memorial, from 7-9 PM (see attached flyer)
City staff have been working together with a group of building industry, green building, and environmental organization representatives to discuss and begin to formulate a policy on green buildings that would be applicable to certain new development in the City of Alexandria. This work group has investigated and discussed potential green building certification programs, applicability to various building types, City priorities for green buildings, education and outreach opportunities, and phasing of implementation. The work group has also studied what other jurisdictions locally and nationally have done with regard to green building requirements.
A draft report is now available on the Department of Planning and Zoning website (http://alexandriava.gov/planning/info/default.aspx?id=18156) that provides information in support of a recommended policy.
A Green Building Forum will be held on January 28, 2009, in the theater at the George Washington Masonic Memorial from 7-9 pm. The purpose of the forum will be:
• To present information on green building benefits and practices
• To present a draft Green Building policy
• To obtain public input and support for the policy
• To review next steps
The forum will be structured as a panel discussion with participants from the building industry, green building organizations, environmental representatives, and City staff. It will address the importance of Green Buildings to the City and the Region, how the City is already incorporating Green Buildings into public and private projects, and a draft Green Building policy. This is to be followed by public comment and questions.
Based on the information and feedback provided at the forum, the draft Green Building Report will be finalized and presented to Planning Commission and City Council for action.
Free parking is available on the north side of the memorial at the top of the hill. The Masonic Memorial is also a short walk up the hill from the King Street Metro Station. ADA Accessibility: To request materials in an alternative format or a disability accommodation, please contact Kim Agee in P&Z at 703-838-4666.
