I guess 40 bits isn't nearly as strong as it used to be...  Hopkins used 16 FPGAs in parallel to quickly crack the Exxon-Mobil and car imobilizing RFIDs produced by Texas Instruments.  Kind of like an update to the Enigma-cracking "Bombes" of Alan Turing and WWII fame.

It appears TI relied largely on the fact that the challenge-response and encryption used in these tags is unpublished and held closely by TI.  Alas, there is no security in obscurity.
