General Coverage Radio

Fellow Taco Fans
Would you canvas your sources and underused radios for a good general
coverage receiver.  I am looking to purchase one for a modest sum.  I am
trying to get a neighbor family interested in radio - they have 5 boys
and this is a perfect place to plant the seed corn of ham radio.  I had
an old general coverage radio I was going to give them but when I dusted
it off (litterally) the shortwave section was dead.  Please reply back
