FW: [CRAPRS] Dropped packets

I have an antique HK-232 optimized for HF work monitoring the channel.
It can really dig out a signal from the crud. Lately, it is almost
continuously receiving bursts of packet information. From my PHG of 1160,
the antenna is only at 20 feet, and is a 6 db gain VHF marine antenna.

Not all packets received are being decoded by my measly TNC-X used
for 'Marion's only solar powered digi' but many are. UI-View has regularly
shown stations from 175 to
285 miles being picked up. Yes, I'd say the band is certainly up.

>From your server, you have N9QIP-9 beyond Platteville heard direct at 94.5
miles out, and N9HOI near Peoria at 106 miles out. I have many similar
listings on my screen, too.

Makes you wonder what we can do to enjoy this great DX opening on 2 meters.
I'll bet the SSB guys are going crazy.

For APRS, I guess the solution to an open band is not to have a bunch of
high power, high antenna digis, but be like the cell phone companies: many
low power, range controlled stations. It might take a few decades for the
APRS system to reach that stage, if ever.

X-Been-There: CRAPRS

I've been noticing my own tracker packets are not always heard for the last
couple of days. But this may be because propagation is so good it causes
the "hidden transmitter" problem. My digi has heard 335 stations over the
last 24 hours:

So the packet may be dropped because the digi is hearing another, distant
packet at the same time.

Oh, hello Tom. Let's try to meet on some repeater tonight, and see if we
can untangle this. If that's not convenient, I usually hang out on 443.8
MHz, 192.8 Hz tone. Give me a shout.

This kind of thing is exactly why we started this list. I'm glad we are
using it for it's intended purpose.
