Gang,

Further to Sandy's wise advice to test for smoke, yes by all means do
so.

My new CompUSA battery backup box operated satisfactorily for about 30
minutes, into a 100 watt bulb, prior to shutting down. The top of the  
plastic box was very warm, but I could still keep my hand on it.

It has now  been recharged and has restarted to operate as a backup
system.
