I have read the paper by Trainotti.  (Short Medium Frequency AM Antennas, 
Valentin Trainotti, IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting,  Vol 47, No. 
3,  September 2001.)

It is a really good paper.  It provides a great quantitative overview of 
about all the short antennas and their performance and characteristics. 
Then he analyzes the Cross Field Antenna.   He builds and tests one and 
shows that it falls short of more conventional short antennas.

I think this will put the CFA to bed.

A great tutorial on short antennas and the strong and weak points of
each.
