My rule of thumb for LF receiving loops is to use Reg Edwards'
RJELOOP3.EXE program to calculate the parameters of a particular loop
design, and to shoot for a gain of -60 dB or better (smaller negative
numbers are better) at the lowest frequency of interest. With a decent
preamp, that will get you down to the noise floor on a quiet night at a
quiet location. Typically you can do quite well with a 6 foot or larger
loop; there should be no need to go to more than 10 feet. I use an
8-foot loop for LowFER reception in a quiet rural area, and don't feel
that there has ever been a time when receiver noise was a limiting
factor.
